with level 2 fully explored, i'm ready to try out some more scrolls - i'm still wary of accidentally reading a scroll of teleportation.

very useful - a scroll of identify! this will tell me the properties of any one item i'm carrying. while some items - like potions and scrolls - usually disclose their natures on use, wearable objects - like rings and amulets - often have a more subtle effect (and could be cursed). i don't like to wear unidentified rings: i could have a ring of ice on my finger and not know until a fireball takes away half my hp in a single hit. i type ? to bring up my inventory and select a granite ring as the target of the identify scroll. it's not a ring of ice, but a +2 ring of protection!

a ring of protection, when worn, provides an extra point of armor - a +2 ring of protection provides three! i press SHIFT P for "Put on" and choose to wear it on my right hand. (to remove it i'd use SHIFT T - for "Take off".)

the scroll of teleportation at last. teleportation warps me to a random location on the current dungeon level, but it's not instantaneous - the effect occurs several turns after the scroll is read. scrolls of teleportation require a little planning to use, which is why their usefulness in emergencies is limited; scrolls of blinking, on the other hand, teleport me instantly, but only to somewhere i can see.

a few turns later, i am somewhere different. but i've already explored this entire level, so it's on to the stairs.
