i've explored the entirety of the first level of the dungeon, and my map is complete. (the white dot on the map is me; red dots are staircases leading down, and blues lead up - in this case, out of the dungeon.) along the way i raised my experience level to 3 and found a pair of gloves. i also picked up a few scrolls.

scrolls have many uses, some beneficial and some not, which activate when they're read. their appearance is randomized at the start of each game, so i don't know which scroll has which effect. there are a few ways to identify them, the easiest being to read them. i've waited until exploring the whole floor before reading any, for a few reasons: if i read a scroll of teleportation, i don't want to end up in unexplored territory surrounded by monsters; if i read a scroll of identify, i'd prefer to have picked up something worth identifying rather than waste the scroll; if i read a scroll of curse weapon or armor, i want to maximize my chances of also having picked up a scroll of remove curse.

i read the first scroll using the r key. the glow indicates that this is a scroll of enchant armor: my gloves will now provide one more point of armor!

every scroll has some effect: if this one doesn't do anything, it could be because i don't have an appropriate object for it to affect. it might be a scroll of remove curse - producing no result because none of my inventory is cursed. or it could be a scroll of recharging - useless without a wand to charge.

a scroll of detect curse! reading this scroll instantly identifies whether anything i'm carrying is cursed or uncursed. reading it before trying on a piece of armor or weapon i've found on the floor may save me a valuable scroll of remove curse.

the last scroll, a scroll of forgetfulness, wrecks my precious map. good thing i'd waited until i was finished exploring! onward to level 2 - i move to a down staircase (there are several, each leading to the same floor) and press the > key to descend.
