i read an identify scroll to identify a wand (a wand of slowing, it turns out) and am prompted to pick another item to identify. lucky! this identify scroll has multiple uses.

i identify my silvery potions - the most plentiful in my inventory. my hunch is confirmed: they're potions of heal wounds. potions of heal wounds don't cure poison or sickness, but restore a bunch of hp. they're useful to have on hand. i'm prompted to choose yet another item to identify.

i choose a scroll that produced no effect earlier. it's a scroll of recharging - if i wield a wand when i read it, the wand will receive a few more charges. since i wasn't holding a wand when i first tried to read the scroll, it had no effect. that's it for the identify scroll, but let's try and figure out a few more scrolls while we're at it.

don't worry - this is one of a few possible messages produced by the "scroll of random uselessness", which doesn't actually do anything. since it never produces a tangible effect, it's never identified unless an identify scroll is used. this scroll is harmless.

this scroll, on the other hand, is not. it's a scroll of immolation, and is a good reason not to read unknown scrolls in the middle of a fight. it doesn't appear on the first few levels of the dungeon, so it should come as an unpleasant surprise rather than instant death. because it explodes in a radius around me, it can damage enemies in addition to myself, but i wouldn't try it. and that's all the scrolls i have at the moment.
