exploring the third level doesn't take long. this can't be the whole level! i want to explore as much of any floor as possible before descending to the next, because i need the experience from combat and the items i can find. instead of going down, i take the staircase back up.

there are several staircases linking each floor with the next. if i've seen everything one staircase leads to, i'll try another.

this part of level three is even smaller! i'm betting there's a secret passage at one end of this room. secret doors - and traps - can be found by pressing the s key, which causes my character to search adjacent spaces. it might take several tries. since i'm confident there's a secret door here, i'm just going to walk up to the wall and hit SHIFT 5 - the "rest 100 turns" command: remember, all those turns are spent searching.
